In the German championship classic sprint Andreas Schlutter took home the victory with Dirk Klessen coming in 2nd, Johannes Bredl in 3rd and Jens Filbrich in 4th. Giorgio di Centa won the 15km skate race of the Italian championships that were held over Christmas. He was six seconds in front of Pietro Piller Cottrer and 36 seconds in front of Fabio Santus. For the women Sabina Valbusa won the 10km skate race with a 39 second margin over Gabriella Paruzzi. Antonella Confortola came in third, 45 seconds behind Valbusa.

Over Christmas Tchepalova won the 10km skate race in the Russian championships, beating out Evgenia Medvedeva-Abruzova and Natalia Baranova-Masolkina. For the men Evgeni Dementiev was the victor with Artem Norin finishing second and Vjadimir Vilissov coming in third. The Russians also held a sprint race where Alena Sidko won for the women and Vassili Rochev for the men.

Her speed not only carried her ahead of her competitors, 200meters later it swept her over an embankment at the bottom of a downhill turn and into the trees. Possibly an even bigger factor is the excellent trail preparation done during the offseason. The trails have been manicured so that races can be held on only a few inches of snow, with hardly any dirt, rocks, or vegetation showing through.
