Hello fellow ski enthusiasts, Finding myself with 2 weeks between jobs, I was unable to find a last-minute mileage ticket to europe. I was able to cash in those about-to-expire air miles for a trip to Queenstown, South Island. A great way to get a jump on northern the ski season. Only 12 hour flight from San Fran to Auckland, then another 2 hours to Queenstown and a 1 hour drive. The lodge, run now...

This is the first article in a three part series documenting the 2008 Ski Mountaineering Season from the perspective of Lyndsay Meyer and Nina Silitch. Nina Silitch and I sat upstairs in her home office in Chamonix silently filling out a stack of race forms. She translated the French words I didn't understand, and in turn I handed her a stack of Euros so she could write the checks. This was our second year of...
I’m waking up to another clear sunny day here in Falls Creek, Australia. The clink of the chair lift is just starting up; Finn Marsland’s apartment, where fellow XC Oregon skier Zach Violett and I, as well as Gaber Lah (Slovenian skier/former Archery Biathlon World champ/Austrian National Team Wax Tech) are staying, is right next to the main lift out of the village. The nordic trails are just a couple steps away as well. Temps...
The 3rd Annual Cuddy Classic Roller Ski Race took place last weekend on Saturday August 23, in Anchorage and coincided with grand opening of the Cuddy Family Midtown Park. The park boasts a small amphitheater; approximately two kilometers of walking paths, as well as a 400-meter paved speed skating oval. It was on this oval that the start and finish of the day’s roller ski racing took place. The event was a two-stage competition consisting...
Like many skiers, I try to incorporate a lot of variety into my training. Variety ensures that my training is well-rounded, and makes it more fun than doing the same thing day after day, week after week. Variety can mean new places to train, different workout formats, or trying entirely different sports. One sport that I've recently gotten into is cyclocross. For readers unfamiliar with 'cross, imagine if you took a criterium bike race and...
Racing at 9500 feet is a whole new world of fun. I was just standing beside my bed this morning and my heart rate monitor showed 120 bpm. No lie. The past several mornings, my heart rate has been high, but not that high. Before every race, I like to have a very good idea of how things will go. In biathlon, there are a lot more things that you can't control than in, say,...
