Honoring Sean McCabe

FasterSkierNovember 9, 2009

Sean McCabe passed away on Saturday, November 7th, after battling cancer.  McCabe, an artist, teacher and athlete, was the husband of two-time Olympian Laura McCabe.  Sean taught art for nearly 20 years, and is known in the cross-country ski community for his paintings of cross-country ski scenes.

He leaves behind his wife Laura, 7-year-old daughter Novie, and 3-year-old daughter, Dashe.

The McCabes make their home in the Methow Valley.  Writes Marck Waechter of Nordic Ultratune (based in the Methow), “Sean made a proud stand against his odds.  Everyone’s thoughts are with Laura, their daughters Novie and Dashe, as well as Sean’s family and many friends.

“Sean was a teacher and a leader.  Our Methow Valley is populated with young people who are pursuing their dreams because Mr McCabe helped them believe they could succeed.   Our whole Methow Valley community has lost a family member.”
Adds Dave Knoop, “He affected so many people in his kind ways, as well as his insight to teaching kids in a profound way. He was a tough ski competitor in his day, yet often times he would rather just go find the solitude and serenity of the great outdoors as he has shared with us in his artwork.”

You can view some of Sean’s artwork, and read more about him in a 2008 piece in Cross-Country Skier Magazine. More information on Sean’s battle with cancer, and any requests from his family can be found on Sean’s Caring Bridge website.

Our thoughts are with the entire McCabe family, Sean’s friends and the Methow community.
