The Hottest Skier – March’s Sweetest Sixteen

What?  Yeah, that’s right, there are lots of great reasons to be a Nordic skier, but one of them is that there are a whole lot of fit, attractive people wearing spandex.  Here is a list of some of the hottest European skiers on the World Cup.  We may have forgotten a few so feel free to write them into the comment section and we will add them to the list.  We did not want...

Australian XC Ski Team: Report #6

Engadin Ski Marathon, Switzerland, March 14 Ben Sim finished up his season with an impressive 11th place in the Engadin Ski Marathon in Switzerland. The Engadin is the world’s biggest freestyle ski marathon, with over 11000 starters racing the 42km course. Sim was only 16 seconds behind the winner, Olympic gold medalist and home favourite Dario Cologna, and was with the leaders almost all the way to the finish. Vasaloppet, Sweden, March 7 Paul Murray’s...

pit’s the time of year when skiers flock for warm locales, sandy beaches, and a respite from the strain of racing training.  (As has been said before “Beach rhymes with Spring.”)  Send along loosely ski-specific photos (as in they have a skier in them) of the season end to johnnyklister@gmail.com. The best submission receives various useless JohnnyKlister.com detritus (patches, stickers, compromising photos of the Homegrown team.)/p

The World Cup season has come to an end, and with it, so have a number of prominent careers.  Retirements always spike at the end of an Olympic year, and 2010 is no exception.  The list includes Virpi Kuitunen (FIN), Sabina Valbusa (ITA), Laurence Rochat (SUI), Reto Burgermeister (SUI), Rene Sommerfeldt (GER), Sarah Renner (CAN), Milan Sperl (CZE) and Anna Olsson (SWE). Analysis: Performance and Age

The Italian legend Hilde Pedersen are excellent examples of elite cross country ski racers who continued to excel at the international level into their 40’s.  While continuing to compete on the World Cup circuit at that age may not be common, cross country skiing is known for its athletes developing later than in other sports.  Top skiers often continue to be competitive through their late 30’s. In light of these observations, it is natural to...

Over 260 racers ranging in age from 3 years old to 81 years old skied either the Gold, Silver, Bronze, or Junior Rush on a warm, sunny day at Royal Gorge. Snow conditions began with very firm tracks in the morning, leading to some exciting downhill turns, but as the day warmed up the snow slowly began to soften up. The 45 km Gold Rush was won by former Far West Nordic Junior Matt Gelso...

Spring skiing is all about warmth, fun, sun and speed, and this past weekend’s ConocoPhillips Alaska Junior Championships did not disappoint. Seventy skiers, most from Alaska’s interior, competed in the re-born event hosted by the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks’ FXC program at Birch Hill Recreation Area.  Formerly an annual highlight for many of Alaska’s juniors, it had been three years since the last time Cross Country Alaska’s championship races for the J2-J6 age categories...
