So now what? That is the question I have been getting lately. Starting in 2005 I have been a part of every major championships. Some have gone pretty well for myself others have been disasters but now those days are done. Weird to write.   Wh...

It's great to have a mid-winter break at home!  Being in Alaska gives me a chance to sleep in my own bed, hang out with my husband, make sure my friends don't forget who I am (!) and coach folks that I've been working with all spring, summer, and ...

Skar Wins Junior Champs 10 K; Patterson Leads N. Americans in 28th

Even by Norway’s standards, four out of six ain’t bad. After the country’s women swept the podium in the World Junior Championships 5 k freestyle on Wednesday morning, Sindre Bjoernestad Skar collected the country’s fourth medal of the day by winning the men’s 10 k event, topping Germany’s Markus Weeger and Finland’s Perttu Hyvarinen. With the first of seven events down in Otepaa, Estonia, Norway is in possession of two-thirds of the hardware. While Skar...

Diggins Takes Seventh at World Juniors, Behind Norwegian Sweep

Last winter, Jessie Diggins was just another up-and-coming American cross-country skier. At U.S. Nationals, she raced to a solid-but-unspectacular ninth place in the classic sprint, and at the 2010 World Junior Championships in Germany, her top finish was a 25th place, in the 10 k pursuit. What a difference a year makes. After collecting her first national title earlier this month, and only a couple of days removed from illness, Diggins placed seventh in the...

To mark last weekend’s World Cup races in Estonia, I thought a post on Andrus Veerpalu would be in order. I’ve heard it said, from various sources, that Estonian skier Andrus Veerpalu1 has a particular ability to show up at major competitions (i.e. Olympics, World Championships) and significantly over perform, based on his results that [...] Related posts:

After a hectic fall balancing school, travel, and skiing, I decided to take the a break from school this winter just focusing on skiing.  So a little over a week and a half ago I left Craftsbury and flew to Finland, starting what will be a two month stint in Europe. The first stop was in [...]

Otepaa WJ/U-23’s: 10 Juniors to Watch

One of the best things about the World Junior and U-23 Championships is the potential for surprises. Sure, sometimes there are upsets on the World Cup, like last weekend’s victories by Eldar Roenning and Eirik Brandsdal in Otepaa, Estonia. But even if those wins were unexpected, they still came from familiar names—both Roenning and Brandsdal are regulars on the circuit. At World Juniors and U-23’s, which kick off Wednesday, there are likely to be title-winning...
