Great Bear Chase Marathon

CALUMET, Mich. — Competitors have a new event to choose from for the Great Bear Chase Ski Marathon, March 7, 2015, in Calumet, Michigan, hosted by UP Health System. Race organizers have added a skiathlon event to the lineup. Registration is now open at www.greatbearchase.com.

Skiers entering the 50km skiathlon will complete the first 25km using classic technique on the Swedetown Trails race course, change skis in the exchange area in the stadium, and ski the next 25km freestyle. The skiathlon will have prize money for the top four male and female winners, and awards for the top three skiers in each age group.

“As far we know, this is the only marathon-length skiathlon in the U.S.,” said race director Angela Luskin. “The skiathlon has become a popular event at other ski venues and we think the marathon length will have broad appeal.”

Participation in the skiathlon will be capped at 100.

The Great Bear Chase will continue to offer 10km, 25km, and 50km races for both classic and freestyle techniques. The unique post-race “pasty party” will include fresh Cornish pasties, bakery items, gluten-free soup and refreshments at the Calumet High School gym, where showers are also available.

Awards are given for each age category in each race. Unique awards will be presented to the overall fastest man and woman in each race, and skating trophies to the top 10 male and top 5 female skiers in the 50 km freestyle. Door prizes (including NEW skis!) will also be awarded to those present at the award ceremony.
