The International Ski Federation (FIS) has decided to add another stage to the Tour de Ski. The new stage will be held in Toblach (ITA).
“It will clearly be a very challenging tour,” Vegard Ulvang, the chair of the FIS Cross-Country Committee, said of the 2012 Tour de Ski.
True to tradition, Tour de Ski opens with a prologue for men and women in Oberhof (GER) on December 29. The next day features 10- and 15-kilometer pursuits in the same place.
After that, the tour moves to Oberstdorf (GER) for sprint races on December 31, followed by pursuit races on January 1, 2012. Women will race 2x5K, while the men race twice the distance.
After the races in Oberstdorf, the skiers will enjoy a rest day before the racing continues in Toblach (ITA) where they will complete a total of three stages. The first is a 3K race for women and a 5K race for men in Toblach (ITA) on January 3, 2012, followed by a sprint and a pursuit (16K/35K) on January 4 and 5, 2012, and a rest day.
The final stages will take place in Val di Fiemme (ITA) on January 7 and 8, 2012, starting with a 10/20K and concluding with the traditional time trial up the alpine run in Alpe Cermis. The brutal uphill time trial remains the same: 9 kilometers at an incredible incline.
