Nordic Combined star Billy Demong and his quest to become the first US skier to win an Olympic medal in Nordic Combined were featured in USA Today.

“He's the real deal,” Nordic director John Farra said. “He's in his prime. Part of his motivation is knowing he's able to be the first one to medal in the Olympics.”

Demong, 28, became the first American on the Nordic combined overall World Cup podium last season when he finished third in the standings. No American had finished higher than fourth in a sport previously owned by Europeans. He won a World Cup event last year and had five other podium finishes. He says he's feeling stronger going into this year's World Cup, which begins Nov. 29-30 in Kuusamo, Finland.

“It takes a long time to make an endurance athlete,” Demong said. “Each year I get between 2 and 4% better. That's through consistency. We're able to see a trend each year where I take these steps up in my fitness.”
