The Alaska Pacific University Nordic Ski Center Women’s Elite team is honored to be a recipient of the Women’s Sport Foundation Travel and Training grant. APU Women’s Elite team was 1 of 33 Grant Recipients for the 2015 year (30 individual grant recipients and 3 team recipients nationally). This grant will offset the individual athlete’s expenses of on snow glacier camps at APU’s Lowell Thomas Jr. Eagle Glacier Training Facility from the Summer 2015 glacier training season.

“Due to the long race season, it is important that athletes prepare during summer months to be able to meet the stress of the winter race schedule. The top athletes in the world on average spend twenty days each summer on glacier or summer snow fields refining technique, learning to ski in less than ideal conditions similar to what they will face in the Olympic and World Championships, plus build a fitness platform of aerobic work. The women on this team represent the best Nordic skiers in the United States. In addition, our club has Junior level skiers ages 12-18 years old training hard and aspiring to be future Olympians as well. Our elite team inspires our younger APU club skiers to dream big and that the Olympic dream is possible.” – Erik Flora

The Women’s Sport Foundation Travel & Training Fund provides direct financial assistance to aspiring athletes – in individual and team sports – with successful competitive records who have the potential to achieve even higher performance and rankings. Travel & Training grants allow serious female athletes a chance to fulfill their potential on the regional, national or international level through assistance for coaching, specialized training, equipment, athletic attire, and/or travel.

Accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, Alaska Pacific University is committed to personalized, experiential learning that incorporates Alaska as our principal classroom. APU is Alaska’s only four-year, private baccalaureate liberal arts university.
