BEA Founder and Director Husaby Leaves His Post, But Mission Continues

In the summer of 2013, Bend Endurance Academy (BEA) Executive Director Ben Husaby made what some may have considered a strange company purchase. The two-time Olympic cross-country skier bought an old yellow school bus, painted a pale-blue stripe lengthwise down its side and inscribed the organization’s moniker where an educational institution name once was. Why? Was he planning to shuttle BEA student-athletes to and from school during his spare time? Not quite. When Husaby founded the...

In an effort to showcase the North Americans competing at this past week’s International Ski Federation (FIS) 2017 USANA Nordic Junior World Championships and U23 Cross Country World Championships at Soldier Hollow in Midway, Utah, we asked those qualifying athletes several questions about themselves — actually, we had them fill in the blanks. Here we have 19-year-old Bill Harmeyer, of the University of Vermont, who represented the U.S. at his first Junior Worlds. To start the week, Harmeyer...

One of the staples of Bend Endurance Academy’s nordic program, the 26-year-old Blackhorse-von Jess grew up in Bend, Ore., and skied for Dartmouth College before returning to his native state – and town. Back in Bend, Blackhorse-von Jess trains mostly with...

Each year, Bend Nordic Team skiers travel to Newport, OR for a fall training camp coached by Ben Husaby and Brenna Knowles.  The trip itinerary is simple. Surf, eat, intervals, eat, surf, rest, repeat! This year the ocean waves were kind to new surfers and fresh, raw oysters were a perfect post workout treat.  The athletes enjoyed testing themselves at sea level. According to Dakota Blackhorse von Jess, “The roller-skiing at sea level was awesome...

Ben Husaby, a former Olympic cross-country skier and a six-time winner of Central Oregon’s annual Pole Pedal Paddle multisport race, has been dismissed from his position as nordic director of the Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation. Chuck Kenlan, director of MBSEF, said Friday that he could not discuss the reason for Husaby’s dismissal because it is a confidential personnel issue. “All I can say is that Ben is no longer with MBSEF, and we wish...
