After a week of back-to-back, high-stakes racing, the 2013 Junior and U23 World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic are finished and teams have all scattered back home to get ready for the next race. The North Americans had a lot to say about Liberec, renewed motivations and their takeaways from the experience that didn't make our original race reports; here are the leftover notes from throughout the week.

Americans Notch 10th, 12th in Junior Worlds Relays

On the very last day of Junior World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic, the U.S. women's and men's relays placed 10th and 12th, respectively. A fall in the men's relay tripped up a stellar early scramble by Logan Hanneman, while Ben Saxton and Heather Mooney each skied high-ranking splits for the Americans.

Canadians Wrap Up Junior Worlds with 13th, 15th in Relays (Updated)

It would’ve been so easy to dwell on the numbers, results and superficial measures of success. But racing is about so much more than that. Canada’s juniors, particularly its women, understood that. They worked hard and finished 13th, and the Canadian men took 15th.

Russian Men End Junior Worlds on Ultimate High; Swedish Women Squeak by for Relay Win

Led by two-time individual champion Dmitry Rostovtsev, Russia racked up another victory in the men's relay on Sunday, the last day of Junior Worlds. In the women's relay, Sweden's Stina Nilsson used her sprinting ability to charge late and oust Russia's Nadezhda Shuniaeva .

Bjornsen Finishes U23s on a High Note, Takes 16th in 30k Skiathlon

Erik Bjornsen nabbed his third top-20 of the week on Saturday with a 16th-place finish in the 30 k skiathlon at U23 World Championships. Caitlin Patterson led three American women in the top-30 by taking 19th in the women's 15 k.

Ustiugov and Haga Repeat Titles in Skiathlon at U23 Worlds

In the last race of the U23 World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic, the skiathlon gold medals went to two individuals who have already been dominant this week. Sergey Ustiugov (RUS) continued his winning streak in the men’s 30 k event and Ragnhild Haga (NOR) took home the title in the women's 15 k.

Mooney Takes 26th to Lead U.S. in World Juniors Skiathlon

For the second time this week Heather Mooney led the U.S. contingent at World Junior Championships. She finished 26th in the 10 k skiathlon, another personal best for her in the discipline. Kyle Bratrud was 34th in the men's 20 k to lead the American men.

Stadlober Takes Gold, Russian Men Monopolize Junior Skiathlon Podium

Dmitry Rostovtsev led a Russian sweep of the podium in the junior mens 20 k skiathlon in Liberec, Czech Republic, on Friday. The lone non-Russian to break through to the medals was the women's winner, Teresa Stadlober of Austria, who held a charging Nadezhda Shuniaeva at bay for the victory.

Patterson, Bjornsen Lead U.S. with Top 15s in U23 Freestyle Races

Caitlin Patterson and Erik Bjornsen led the Americans on Thursday at the U23 World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic. Patterson was 14th in the women's 10 k freestyle and Bjornsen skied his last few kilometers with the race winner to place 15th in the 15 k.

Widmer Tallies Top 30 in U23 Distance Race; Canadian Men Struggle with Numbers

Heidi Widmer bounced back from what she considered a sub-par sprint to place 28th in Thursday's 10 k freestyle at U23 World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic. AWCA teammate Annika Hicks was 37th, and just two Canadian men raced with two others out sick.

First year on Canada's National Junior Ski Team, first race trip to Europe, first age category win in a NorAm race. On Wednesday, she added her first top 15 at Junior World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic, to the list.

Mahlen, O’Connell Lead U.S in Junior Worlds Distance Freestyle

Junior World Championships continued in Liberec, Czech Republic, on Wednesday. Forrest Mahlen and Sawyer Kesselheim put up another pair of top-30s for the U.S. in the men’s 10 k freestyle, placing 27th and 29th, respectively. Mary O’Connell led the way for the American women with 33rd in the 5 k.

Germany's Victoria Carl notched her second straight medal at Junior World Championships on Wednesday, winning gold in the 5 k skate event. Dmitry Rostovtsev of Russia won the men's 10 k ahead of teammate Artem Maltsev.

Sophie Caldwell and Erik Bjornsen posted personal bests in the classic sprint at U23 World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic. The Americans each made it as far as the semifinals; Caldwell finished ninth and Bjornsen was 10th.

The Americans at Junior World Championships in Liberec, Czech Republic, this week started things off with a bang in the classic sprint on Monday, qualifying four athletes for the heats. Ben Saxton and Logan Hanneman led the way in 14th and 16th, respectively. Heather Mooney was 19th and Corey Stock 24th.

Nakkertok's Katherine Stewart-Jones led the Canadians on Day 1 of the Junior World Championships, placing 25th in the classic sprint. Excited with her result, she was one of two Canadians to qualify for the heats; Alexis Turgeon (CNEPH) made it through in 30th.

Bad Luck Halts American Men in Liberec Semifinals

Simi Hamilton and Andy Newell began their semifinal in good position with the leaders in the Liberec team sprint, but got unlucky when a Finn fell in front of Hamilton before the last exchange. The duo finished fifth in the heat for 13th overall and did not advance to the finals.

The four Canadians in Saturday's classic sprint made the rounds, where Dasha Gaiazova in fourth led the team in all-around solid day. Gaiazova narrowly missed the podium in a photo finish, Perianne Jones tallied a career best in ninth and Lenny Valjas also made the top 10.
