World Junior Championships

The U.S. Ski Team is offering four coaching positions for the 2011 World Junior and U23 World Championships. All four positions are fully funded by NCCSEF. Coaches looking to apply for these positions should have experience working with athletes aged 16-22, a strong background in waxing and testing skis, and be willing to work hard for two weeks and seven races. That said, we are looking to develop coaches and welcome all applications from coaches wishing to gain...

What Happens To Successful World Junior Racers?

Identifying talent in endurance athletics at a young age can be a challenging task.  My goal in this article is to give you a sense of what different levels of success at WJC/U23s might indicate and how much variability there is between athletes in this respect. Our basic tool will be a graph of FIS points versus age for distance results, broken down by their best result (finishing place) at WJC/U23s.  This gives us a...

Norway Tops Women’s Relay in Thrilling Finale; U.S. Team Eighth, 15 Seconds From Fourth

With pursuit champion Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg and sprint champion Hanna Brodin anchoring their respective teams, today’s women’s relay race was primed for a showdown. Oestberg, a Norwegian, had proven to be one of the strongest distance skiers here at the World Junior Championships after winning the pursuit, while Brodin, a Swede had dominated the sprint. The 3.3k distance was right in between the two disciplines. They received the tag ten seconds apart, with Oestberg in...

Sedov Dominates World Junior Pursuit; Patterson 20th

The snow fell furiously during the men’s 20k pursuit at World Junior Championships—as hard as Scott Patterson said he had ever seen it snow during a race. But there was another force of nature here today that was stronger than the weather: a tall, stocky 19-year-old Russian named Petr Sedov. At the end of the classic leg of the 20k pursuit here, Sedov had already dropped the entire field except for one: his teammate, Evgeni...

Patterson Leads American Juniors with 17th in Hinterzarten; Norway’s Golberg Wins

They’re not the Northug family yet, but give them some time. After Caitlin Patterson skied to a 17th place showing in this morning’s women’s 5k classic at the World Junior Championships, Scott Patterson wouldn’t be shown up, matching his older sister’s position in the men’s 10k in the afternoon. According to Matt Whitcomb, the head coach of the American juniors here, Scott had told his sister that he would beat her placing in his own...

In a promising start for the American team here, the U.S. qualified two women for the heats in the World Junior Championships freestyle sprint. Jessie Diggins and Sophie Caldwell placed 18th and 19th, respectively, both about eight seconds back of the winner, Kari Oeyre Slind of Norway. “The hills are tough,” Caldwell said, “my legs haven’t hurt this bad for a while.” With the snow that fell overnight tapering off, Caldwell said that the course...

The Road to Whistler: Noah Hoffman

At just 19 years old, Noah Hoffman is brimming with potential.  He followed 2008’s 12th place in the 10k classic at the World Junior Championships with a 17th and a 14th this year, but then emerged from a month off to take a solid fourth place (second American) at Distance Nationals in Fairbanks. Hoffman is currently training with the U.S. Ski Team in Park City, Utah. FasterSkier: Before we start talking about what you’re doing...
