Alaska's teams for the 2004 Junior Nationals and Arctic Winter Games began to take shape last weekend, as the second of three weekends of qualifying races were held in Homer, Alaska. The Besh Cup race series, the premier race series in Alaska held races 3 & 4 of the six race series on the beautifully groomed trails of McNeil Canyon in Homer. With the sun overhead (well, on the horizon at least), great snow on the ground, and beautiful views in all directions, it made for a great weekend of skiing.
In the men's and boy's races, Dan Clark was the fastest J1/OJ, winning by 30 seconds over Mike Hinckley. Brett Broda was third. Patrick Johnson won the J2 class, ahead of Karl Schauer and Mason Hulen. Other age group winners were David Norris (J3), Logan Hanneman (J4), Blaine Bronga (J5), and Magnus Pedersen (J6). In the open category, Frode Lillefjell posted the fastest 15K time of the day, ahead of Colin Quinn-Hurst and Todd Boonstra.
Sunday was the free technique race. Sarrissa Lammers, Kari Pedersen, and Kinsey Loan, Magnus Pedersen, and Logan Hanneman all repeated their age group victories, while Jaime Bronga won the girls J3 class, Jens Bombeck won the boys J5, aand Alex Treinen won the boys J3.
