Bjorndalen Closing In On Daehlie’s Record

Biathlon skier Ole Einar Bjorndalen has 45 World Cup victories, which is one less than cross country skiing legend Bjorn Daehlie captured in his fantastic career. Bjorndalen might tie Daehlie’s record in this weekend’s biathlon World Cup racing in Oberhof. The first race is Friday.

Bjorndalen called his fantastic biathlon World Cup race in Holmenkollen, Norway in December “the perfect race” and climbed with that up to 45 victories.

Bjorndalen is planning on racing until the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, Canada and should have a good chance at beating Bjorn Daehlie’s record.

Most skiing World Cup victories:

Ingemar Stenmark, alpine 86
Annemarie Moser-Proll, alpine 62
Alberto Tomba, alpine 50
Herman Maier, alpine 46
Marc Giradelli, alpine 46
Bjorn Daehlie, cross country skiing 46
Matti Nykanen, ski jumping 46
Jelena Velbe, cross country skiing 45
Ole Einar Bjorndalen, biathlon 45
