May Training in the Rain Makes You Tough!

emContributed by Bill Bowler – /emHere in Fort Kent, dryland training for the upcoming 2010 season has begun, and along with it we’ve had a variety of interesting weather conditions. A few days ago, we had beautiful spring weather with 60 degree sunshine, but are now faced with rain and temperatures in the 40s for a few days. May is a difficult time of the year for just about any skier/biathlete. It’s all about making the transition back to structured training, which isn’t easy after a month off. It’s kind of like jump-starting a car, as a bit of extra effort is required to get your body going again. You may not feel great for the first few days, but the fitness gained during the previous season will gradually return. On a long run through the trails here at the Tenth Mountain Lodge yesterday, I am starting to feel strong again. Spring workouts are also a great way to build mental fortitude, especially when conditions are challenging. br /br /This year, I’m fortunate to be able to do a significant amount of my training here at the lodge in Fort Kent. It is truly a world-class facility, as it has a 30-point biathlon range, a newly paved 3.5 km rollerski loop, and fantastic running trails. br /br /May is also a great time to dial in your daily routine for the upcoming months, and to pay attention to small details that make a big difference in the long run. Some of these details include adequate sleep, proper nutrition/hydration, and equipment maintenance. The best way to recover from workouts is to drink constantly during training (at least once every ½ hour), and then take in liquid carbohydrates and protein immediately afterwards. Eating right and sleeping well are the best ways to absorb hard workouts. Training is a constant progression of fatiguing your body, and then building it back to a level higher than where you started. Enjoy it!div class=”blogger-post-footer”img width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6813061107698506856-3339476303941942354?l=mwscbiathlon.blogspot.com’ alt=” //div
