On Friday’s second day of racing at the IBU World Championships in Östersund, Sweden the women raced the 7.5-kilometer sprint. Slovakia’s Anastasiya Kuzmina skied a single penalty lap to mark a winning time of 22:17.5 minutes. Norway’s Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold shot clean to place second, 9.7 seconds back. Laura Dahlmeier of Germany also shot clean to earn third place at 12.6 seconds behind.

In her fourth World Championships, Clare Egan for the U.S. earned her best career individual championship result by placing 11th (+33.3). Egan skied a single penalty lap shooting prone. Also in for a championship career best was U.S. biathlete, Joanne Reid. Reid raced to 15th overall (+50.1) while shooting clean. This is Reid’s second World Championships.

Also for the U.S., Susan Dunklee placed 57th (+2:30.6) missing two targets each in prone and standing.

Rosanna Crawford was the top Canadian in 18th. She finished 56.0 seconds back after missing a single target shooting prone. Sarah Beaudry for Canada was 47th (0+2, +2:09.8), Emma Lunder 51st (0+1,+2:11.4), and Megan Bankes 58th (0+2,+2:31.7).

The top 60 athletes advance to Sunday’s 10 k pursuit.

“Yesterday in the mixed relay was probably one of my worst ski days of the year,” Crawford wrote in a post-race email. “So I didn’t have high expectations going into today’s sprint. Especially with the conditions we were faced with, fresh deep snow is not my forte! But I just focused on what I could control, my skiing and shooting and went for it. I’m really happy with how things turned out, 9/10 on a windy day is good and skiing was one my of best of the year. Our techs have been working so hard and delivered some incredible skis today as well! I’m also pumped we have all four of us in the pursuit on Sunday!”
