FasterSkier is Hiring!

FasterSkierNovember 10, 2012

FasterSkier is looking to fill two positions for the upcoming season, a part-time staff reporter and an intern. Please contact us at info@fasterskier.com.

The Race Reporter is expected work with less oversight than the Winter Intern and will focus primarily on weekend race coverage. Interns will work closely with FasterSkier editorial staff and perform a wider variety of tasks. Optimally the Race Reporter will have some experience in journalism.

If you have any questions on either position please ask! We are looking to fill both positions immediately.

Race Reporter

FasterSkier is looking to hire a part-time reporter for the 2012-2013 ski season.

If you are passionate about skiing and are interested in journalism, this is an ideal position.

Applicants must be able to work weekends with assignments generally falling Friday through Monday.

Primary duties include race reporting, follow-up articles, previews, and participating in a weekly staff conference call.

Applicants must be highly motivated, reliable, and work well independently.

There may be opportunity for some travel but the applicant should expect to report remotely. There is potential for the applicant to transition to a full-time position with greater responsibility in the future.

Full-time racers will not be able to fulfill the job requirements, as reporting must occur early in the day.

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and length of commitment. However, applicants should recognize that like most cross-country ski related jobs, the position will not be overly lucrative.

Winter Intern

FasterSkier is also looking to hire an intern for the winter season. Interns perform a wide variety of tasks related to ski journalism:

–       Brainstorm, pitch and get started on noteworthy stories

–       Scan cross-country skiing news daily; jump on breaking news with blog posts, interviews and timely stories

–       Conduct several interviews per week, most likely via phone or Skype

–       Write several original stories per week (depending on length, 2-4 on average)

–       Develop new sources; maintain good rapport with interviewees while asking pointed, often hard-hitting questions

–        “Attend” weekly conference call (usually lasts up to an hour on Monday mornings); come prepared with your personal plan/objectives for the week

–       Help others as needed, co-authoring at times; check email frequently throughout the day and respond to coworkers’ inquiries or requests

–       Work closely with editor and associate editor as needed

–       Cover events and interview subjects in person when possible; pitch reasonable travel destinations to editor

–       Produce stories from live events in timely manner (i.e. quality work with quotes and scene descriptions within a few hours)

–       Proofread own stories, re-reading several times before publishing. Edit others’ work and ask coworkers to read more in-depth stories or pieces that do not need to be published immediately
