FasterSkier Podcast: Interview with APU Coach Erik Flora

FasterSkierNovember 12, 20121

It’s been a while, but the FasterSkier team is proud to say that our podcast has officially been resurrected.

As we head back into the winter of twenty thirteen, we’ll be producing the show regularly. Expect interviews with the country’s biggest cross-country skiing stars and coaches, plus analysis from the FasterSkier crew.

This week, Topher Sabot and Nat Herz interview Erik Flora, the head coach of the Alaska-Pacific University Nordic Ski Center club team, which includes World Championships medalist Kikkan Randall, and U.S. Ski Teamers Holly Brooks, and Erik and Sadie Bjornsen.

Randall has been dealing with a stress fracture in her right foot, so we started by asking Flora the obvious question: how is she doing?

Interesting exchange—I think Kikkan will surprise people as with all the years of training she has put in and with what she has done(see her trng report on SkiTrax) this summer and fall thru this foot injury period she is not that far behind. Its possible she might even be better—crazy, I know, but I’ve seen some similar situations—broken wrists(casted) torn up ankle(casted) in preseason—and start the season on fire—with only 3-4 weeks of training before the first races.
Holly, is one of the herd of ladies behind Kikkan that makes up the USAs strongest team in the history of the sport–in my estimation. Last year was in my mind a stepping off point into new territory of excellence with depth. Something no other US team has ever done or has had this depth. Way better stuff coming then last year from these ladies.
Erik, I think in the future you need to think about one of those 5 month tickets—the travel this year is going to have you seeing yourself passing yourself in a few airports. Stay healthy man! Keep up the good work.
