Sami Jauhojaervi Wins Trondheim 50K, Canadian Alex Harvey Takes Third

Train WreckMarch 14, 20092

In a tight and competitive field, Sami Jauhojaervi of Finland won today’s classic 50K mass start in Trondheim, followed by German Tobias Angerer in second and Canadian Alex Harvey in third.

Coming off of a World Championship 50K win in Liberec, Norwegian Petter Northug also skied well taking 5th.

Taking the last podium spot, this is Harvey’s best World Cup race to date with only 6.32 points. With much success at U23’s and the NorAm Cup, Alex’s best result before today was a 5th place in the team sprint in Liberec. The Canadian skied an extremely consistent race holding the top five with Angerer and Russian Maxim Vyleghanin for almost the entire race.

Many North American congratulations to Alex!

Pierre Harvey won the Holmenkollen 50km World Cup race in 1988. I believe he is the only North American ever to win Holmenkollen. Has any other North American skier been top 3 in a World Cup, Olympic, or World Championship 50km race since Pierre won Holmenkollen in 1988? I can’t think of anyone… It would be interesting to know if Alex is the first skier to do so since his dad’s victory – 21 years later.

For that matter, it would be interesting to see a list of all top 3 finishes by North Americans in international 50km races. Are there are any others besides Pierre and Alex Harvey?

Benji—another FIRST for sure, is TWO CANADIANS in the top ten—that has never been done for sure! This Canadian Men’s team has the potential to be the surprise team of next year’s Olympics—-they have a good 6-8 senior men that have scored WC points and a bunch of younger boys in the Harvey bracket that were gang-busters at the U-23s this year another guy on the sidelines recovering from ankle surgery that we didn’t get to see race this year—Drew Goldsack. They have the two big words going for them that TALENT and DEPTH that wins races.
