Rosie Brennan racked up six victories in eight races in the U.S. before finishing her season in Europe, and Dakota Blackhorse-von Jess also won both national sprints and subsequently qualified for World Championships, making them our Continental Skiers of the Year.
Bend Endurance Academy's Dakota Blackhorse-von Jess answered 10 questions on the eve of the 2015 World Championships in Falun, Sweden, as part of our series on World Champs rookies.
The reigning double-sprint champion from 2015 U.S. nationals, Dakota Blackhorse-von Jess talks about race prep and how he practices getting up to speed in training. "Personally I have an incredibly hard time replicating a race effort," he says. "The 15-15 is how I practice qualification."
Dakota Blackhorse-von Jess knows as well as anybody that falls is the time to up the intensity. "For the first time since the training year started in May, I get to play in the area of threshold - and threshold plus," he explains. "Wednesdays we hit the trails: pole bounding in mixed terrain."
Bend Endurance Academy head coach Ben Husaby has a good sense of humor when it comes to his one-man team. Dakota Blackhorse-von Jess is their guy, but luckily BEA has a roost of "ravenettes" pushing the 27 year old during summer training.
