, winning a ticket
to the final period of the World Cup.

So we’ll be seeing you on the World Cup in 2003/2004?

Yes, I hope so. Towards the end of the season I see myself racing the big races
in Europe I see the winter as parts to my season. There’s the early part
with some good races we’re getting into now. In the midseason I’ll
go back to training without racing. Then its time to rev it up again for the
end-of-season races.

Dave when did you first begin training systematically for skiing?

I’d have to say probably as a senior in high school. I worked really hard
at a paper mill in high school and in the summer when in college. So this made
it really hard to train as well as I’d like because of the long hours,
working nights. I didn’t really get quality training in until after college.

You’re a graduate from Bates. There’s been a handful of top American
skiers have come out of there in recent years -Justin Freeman, Justin Easter
also come to mind. What was it about the Eastern collegiate ski scene that worked
for you?

I don’t know. It probably wasn’t the ideal, with the western schools
being more competitive with the foreign imports. But you can be good anywhere
if you want to and there were some good guys skiing in the east. I’d hop
into a many Nor-Ams back then as possible. U.S. Nationals and NCAA Championships
were always tough. I must say though its really nice to have a degree. I’m
very satisfied I decided to stick it out.

Coming out of college you really seemed to step your skiing to another level.
What are some of the differences in being a successful college skier to being
a U.S. team member of the 2001 and 2003 Worlds teams?

Training. No doubt about it. Having the time and really putting in quality
training hours. Good, hard training, there’s no secret there. My motivation
rose once I was done with college life.

Do you feel stiffed by not being named to the U.S. Team following several
years of consistently good results?

No. It’s frustrating that the U.S.S.A. doesn’t have the money for
a more complete team but you can’t think about those things. I am doing
just fine. As far as this teams is concerned Trond (Nystad) and Pete (Vordenberg)
have made me feel a part of the team, even though I’m not. Also, not being
named to the team is a huge motivating factor. It’s most important that
I believe in myself.

You hinted that you work closely with both Trond and Pete. Who do you go to
for all your training or technique consultation?

For sure, I work with Trond and Pete. I also work closely with Dick Taylor.
He’s from my home town. Eli Brown is a close friend and innovator who I
can bounce ideas off. It’s a collective effort.

With the ski season getting underway in early November and not finishing
until the Spring Series in April, you spend some time on the road. What’s
a must have for all the traveling?

Books.

Read anything good lately?

I just finished The Book of Tea on Japanese tea ceremonies. I like poetry.
I’ve been reading that lately. Especially Robert Frost. Reading’s
my number one pastime on the road.

Finally, will we see you in Torino 2006?

Absolutely.
