The 10 and 15 kilometer classic races at the 2004 US Masters Nationals in Marquette, Michigan were held on Thursday. The start of the race was postponed about 30 minutes since the temperature close to race time was still -4 F and the windshield factor was around negative 20 to 25. The jury decided however to hold the race as a Championship race when it “warmed up†to 3F (who was breathing on the thermometer?), but made it into a mass-start event where all age categories, men and women started together.

Again great grooming on a well prepped, challenging course with double tracks the whole way.
Notables
Sten Fjelheim (45-49) posted the fastest time of the day among men under 50 with Michael Meyers (35-39) in second and Barry Makarewicz (40-44) in third. Tim Triebold was fastest among men over 50 with Chris Ransom (still with a cast) in second. Per Johnson was the clear winner in 55-59 and Bob Gray was fastest over 60 among the 10 k skiers.

I felt that I had made progress from Tuesday’s pursuit where I lost almost as much in the 5 k classic part as in today’s 15 kilometer event.
Wax:
I had taken off a bit more structure (not much left) and shortened the kick zone by 3 inches. I still had plenty of kick.
My glide wax was SOLDA: F-15 Violet as base, then one layer of HC28 (Black) Hydrocarbon with S-30 on top. I felt I had great glide for the conditions. I used 5 layers of Rode Green Special for kick.
Other medal winners with the same glide wax included: Dan Packman, Chris Ransom, Per Johnsen, Dan Karig and Dick Hunt.
