Why Norway Is Best In Classic Sprint

FasterSkier · February 18, 2004

Interview with the Norwegian Sprint Coach Ulf Morten Aune

– “I think it’s the connection between the skis flex/wax-pocket, wax and the skier’s technique. We have discovered a connection here that is working well for us.”

Why is it that the skiers good technique seems to make more of a difference in this type of competition compared to the traditional longer distances?

– “You need to use your entire technical repertoire in a sprint race and that favors skiers with good technique. This combined with skiers that are good at heat skiing and have speed enough to make it past the prologue makes the difference.”

Aune also feels that the skiers own confidence is key to the success

– “They know that they can perform when they are at the starting line, confidence is very important in sprint racing.”

Why don’t the Norwegian skiers with all these qualities perform as well in skating?

– “Norwegian sprinters are doing better in skate sprints than our all-rounders are doing in traditional length skate races. It’s a question about prioritizing the skate training, develop a better engine, training your skate muscles, and improving your technique. We have worked toward this for 10-15 years now. I will also add that the central European skiers are better in skating than in classic.”
