Olympic and World Champion Bente Skari retired after the 2003 season. She and her husband Geir traveled around the World in her first winter without skiing and competitions on the agenda. She is now back in Norway after seven months “on the roadâ€.
Bente Skari Is Back In Norway After Seven Months Around The World Trip

– It became a different trip for us than for those that are ten years younger doing something similar. We got up early in the morning, and had most of the time our plans ready, while some plans appeared more spontaneous. We used to plan from one to seven days ahead. It became like a field trip, where we often traveled away from the common tourist places on the coast to see other sides of life at the places we visited. We walked a lot says, Bente.
To travel is nothing new for Bente since competing at the World Cup involved lots of traveling, but in a different way than this.
Traveling to competitions and camps is something very different. That’s a job and you see hotel rooms, airports and ski trails. On this trip we were more in contact with the locals and saw how people lived, something that many places weren’t good. You see the World with “new eyesâ€, get new perspectives, and we have it good in Norway.
Now it’s back to reality for Geir and Bente, but she has not used the “vacation†to think much about what she wants to do in the future.
– We have thought a little bit about it, but I’m not sure. I don’t know what I would like to work with. For that reason I’m interested in two-three different, smaller jobs the first year, to find out what I like. This can be a combination of studies and job.
Bente wants to focus on other things than what has characterized her life the last ten years, but she is not opposed to be involved in sport either.
– I want to learn something different that cross country skiing, but something different inside sport like administration or similar would be interesting.Â
The women’s National team coach Svein Tore Samdal expressed this spring that he was interested in asking Bente if she would help the National team.
– I have not got a call yet, so I have to see what it would involve. It can’t be too much but not to little either. It has to be some continuity if you are going to do something and be involved.
In other words, if you are going to do something do it right, with effort and concentration. Maybe something of Bente’s success formula is exactly in that attitude? Â Â Â Â Â
