Saving Last Years Snow For Next Season

Swedish Skidsport.com reports that ski clubs in the northern town of Gallivare have teamed up with the county in order to guarantee early cross country skiing.

Unpredictable snow, race and training camp cancellation have frequently hurt the local economy, the skier’s preparations and the sport.

This new three-year long project involves saving enough of last season’s snow to offer October skiing with a minimum of five kilometer of tracks. The snow will in part be stored indoor (covered with sawdust) in large storage buildings.

The snow will be brought out in early October, weeks ahead of the natural snow. The clubs are also applying for a classic FIS race on November 6.
