James Southam (26) captured first place in the 10-kilometer Continental Cup classic race at Soldier Hollow on December 11. The skiing in Utah was great and he didn’t go home for a Christmas break, but remained in order to prepare for the upcoming US Nationals at the same site. Doing well in the classic race at Nationals is his main goal in making the Worlds-team his dream.
James Southam Is Getting Ready For US Nationals
FasterSkier · December 25, 2004
How was that compared to last year?
– I have made progress from last year where my best was 4th in the 15-kilometer classic, 5th in the sprint and 9th in the distance race.
How are you getting ready for Nationals?
– I’m relaxing and getting in some good training. I’m doing 4-5 days of normal training, like two daily sessions and 3-3.5 hours per day. I’m also doing roughly three interval sessions and one time-trial between the last race in the Continental Cup and the first race at Nationals. My intervals are roughly four minutes long.
What are your goals for Nationals?
– I’m focusing on doing well in the classic race. That’s my best shot at winning. I also hope to ski well enough to make the World’s team. We’ll see.
