Despite a grim outlook the week before, the City of Lakes sprint races went off as planned on Saturday thanks to a huge volunteer shoveling effort and some unexpected snow earlier in the week. A couple nights of colder temperatures allowed for some snow-making which helped as well.
Due to the uncertainty of the events before this week, many top skiers left town to attend other races such as the Boulder Mountain Tour. However there was still some very solid competition for the SuperTour freestyle sprints which were sponsored by Toko and local ski store Finn Sisu.
For the men it was a familiar red Atomic suit that crossed the line first – that of recent Telemark SuperTour winner David Chamberlain. Chamberlain held off a strong effort by Brayton Osgood of the Maine Winter Sports Center, while Russian Alex Churikov (Team Rossignol) was able to grab the final podium spot ahead of local hero Chad Giese. FSx athlete Colin Rodgers, who put up the fastest prelim time, ended up winning the B-final for fifth place overall.
The main 35km mass-start freestyle event is scheduled to be held today. For full results from both the 35km (when available) and the sprint, click here: http://www.onlineraceresults.com/race/view_race.php?race_id=2974
