Norway also has a tradition with such races. Trondheim in 2004 and in Drammen several years in a row and this winter as well.
Hetland says that he wouldn’t mind racing more street sprints, but on simple conditions:
– It’s important that such competitions are good and serious. It can’t be done only for show. Good skiing has to be the main focus, says the 32-yearold.
Hetland believes it’s easier to attract people to a downtown event, than to the forest to watch cross country skiing.
Sprint is priority one
Sprint is still the main focus for Hetland, but other races this season are tempting as well.
– I prioritize sprint, because it’s though that I have to qualify for Worlds. But I’m also looking forward to Tour de Ski, he says.
He also has the overall World Cup victory in the back of his mind.
– I will have a bit more focus on that this season.
Need to get fired up
Hetland has trained as in the past toward this season.
– I’m training in a way that I feel works for me.
Are you nervous ahead of the season or are you too experienced for that now?
– It’s something wrong the day I’m not a little extra excited ahead of the opening of the World Cup. It’s almost getting worse as I’m getting older.
And he says that it’s the opening races and championships that excite him the most.
– I need to get fired up to perform. That’s important to me.
