Kikkan Randall: USA's top female sprinter

What was the highlight of your season?

The highlight of my season was getting my first World Cup podium in Russia. The travel to the race was hectic, the snow conditions were terrible, we only had one waxer/coach, and yet, it turned out to be an amazing race. It felt good to ski side by side with the world’s best, and to feel like I could challenge for the win. The crowd was the most enthusiastic cheering section I’ve ever seen and that made the day even more exciting.

The ski season is long (especially after an intense season). What are your
tricks for recovering in the spring, yet staying motivated for next year?

Yes, I have to admit, being on the World Cup makes for a very long season. Especially with all the travel and moving around. So, I was very excited to get back home earlier this month! Every spring I like to stay active while making it more casual than regular training. Just getting out there for the fun of it! We’re lucky here in Alaska to still have great skiing conditions into the month of May, so I take advantage and ski a bunch. It’s also fun to take time to hang out with friends and family. I’m always amazed at how motivated and excited I am to train after just a few weeks’ break!

What is your plan of attack for this summer and next season?

Looking ahead to next year I just want to make some small adjustments to keep improving my endurance and capacity. I’ve learned I have the speed, now it’s just a matter of making it last longer. I plan to spend most of the summer in Alaska, training with my APU team, as well as participating in a few camps with the National team. The goal for the month coming up is to build a good base that I can build off from later in the year.

Thanks Kikkan, and good luck!
