Frode Estil will be doing lots of double poling

FasterSkier · June 15, 2007

Frode Estil retired from the Norwegian national team this spring, but will race the long-distance World Cup this winter. Long, tough distance workouts on rollerskis will be frequently on the agenda this summer and fall.

– That’s for sure, says coach PÃ¥l Gunnar Mikkelsplass.

This is a new type of racing for Frode. He is an independent skier who enjoys working out, so this should go well, ensures Mikkelsplass.

— What’s ahead for Estil this summer?

— His double-poling isn’t good enough, so quite a few long, tough distance rollerski workouts will be on the agenda. Long-distance racing is a lot about the upper body, says the coach.

Mikkelsplass is of the opinion that it will be ”easy” to make Estil into a long-distance racer. The foundation is there, so Mikkelsplass is starting to increase the volume of double-pole training.

Frode Estil agrees with this philosophy.

— I have realized that a different type of training than what I’m used to is required. I’m not particularly looking forward to all the double-pole workouts, but it’s needed, says the veteran.

– You are starting a new season fully motivated?

— Yes! I can’t guarantee that I will be able to win in this company, but that motivates me.

Frode Estil admits with no hesitation that he has big ambitions when he puts his skis on this winter.

— I have a desire to show my best side. I’m extra motivated now, says Estil, after once again being somewhat of an “underdog”.

May was an easy month. Easier than in past years for Estil, but hard training is just around the corner. He even skied at home in Meråker last weekend!

— It’s a safe bet to be able to ski up in the mountains around here at this time of year. It usually lasts thoughout June. The skiing was firm and nice, but with lots of suction, says Estil.
