Battling bitter temperatures and blustery conditions, fifty-five of the best skiers in New York State faced off in the annual NYSSRA Champions Cup Race on Sunday, March 9, sponsored by High Peaks Cyclery:Nordic Specialists. Robert Douglas of Honeoye Falls won the 25 km New York State Championship race on the Olympic trails of Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid in convincing fashion. Douglas dominated the race from the start, beating defending champion, Paul Allison of North Creek, by almost four minutes. Queensbury’s Kevin Sprague rounded out the podium in third. In the women’s race, Kathy Schwenk of Corfu captured her first State Championshp. Schwenk outpaced Saranac Lake’s, Peggy Wiltberger and Lake Placid’s Karen Delaney for the gold medal.
The race capped off a weekend of State Championship races at the Olympic Sports Complex, and was the final event in the NYSSRA Nordic racing season. On Saturday, March 8, Queensbury’s Mike Wynn won the New York Sprint championship. Wynn rocketed to the gold over Eric Seyse of Scotia and bronze medalist, Jim Kobak of Peru. Wynn also captured the gold skiing with Chris Rose for the Peru Nordic/High Peaks club in the NYSSRA Club Championship Relay. Wynn’s performance over the weekend earned him top honors in the NYSSRA points series. And, the Peru Nordic/High Peaks ski club won the overall NYSSRA club series championship.
