MIDWAY, Utah — The mass start distance races on Wednesday at Soldier Hollow featured plenty of carnage. One report from a J2 boy to his coach was that “there were baskets everywhere!” Multiple skiers broke poles, including the boys’ race leader on the fast descent on the other side of Hermod’s Hill, who nonetheless still recovered to finish in the top five. Karsten Hokanson (Intermountain/Wasatch Nordic Ski Academy) overtook the win in the boys’ race and Lydia Blanchet (AK/APUNSC) claimed her first ever Junior Nationals title.
