VAIL, Colo. — Brian and Caitlin Gregg, Central Cross Country’s husband-and-wife duo, doubled up to sweep the men’s and women’s 10 k freestyle at the Vail Mountain Games on Friday. The pair have been training in the Rockies all week to get ready for the Aspen SuperTour and the altitude training clearly paid off. The Greggs posted their first double victory earlier this season in the final stage of the Tour de Twin Cities, and with another set of gold medals in the trophy case they’re feeling pretty good.
The mass start freestyle event at the Mountain Games was one of a handful of snow sport competitions on the schedule at the popular Vail Mountain event; its proximity to the Aspen SuperTour along with a healthy purse size attracted a decently competitive field. Sylvan Ellefson (Ski & Snowboard Club Vail Team HomeGrown) took second to Gregg, 12 seconds back, and Brent Knight (Alaska Pacific University) finished third (+0:25).
Caitlin Gregg bested Nicole DeYoung (Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation) by 20 seconds; Lenka Palanova (Boulder Nordic Junior Race Team) took third (+0:42).
