Job Description
The Crested Butte Nordic Team (CBNT) Assistant Coach plays a crucial role in the success of CBNT – a dedicated and growing group of young athletes who compete at a national level and train year-round. The Assistant Coach will be responsible for working closely with the Head Coach to design training, lead practices, and provide athlete support at races (including waxing) throughout the ski season, and assist the Head Coach in logistical and administrative tasks in order to provide an excellent athlete experience.
CBNT races Junior National Qualifiers in the Rocky Mountain Division, in addition to FIS races (including a Thanksgiving camp in West Yellowstone, Montana), Senior and Junior Nationals, and other citizen races. The small size of our program and its excellent community support make this an ideal environment for an Assistant Coach to work collaboratively with the Head Coach and gain the essential skills of ski coaching.
About Crested Butte Nordic:
CBNT is housed as part of the Crested Butte Nordic Center, a 501(c) 3 non-profit that has made Crested Butte the Nordic Ski Capital of Colorado. Located at 9000 ft of elevation, with 50 km of trails and some of the highest annual snowfall totals in the US, Crested Butte is as ideal a training and racing environment as a Nordic skier could hope to find.
The Nordic Center runs a multifaceted program that encourages skiers of all ages to get out on skis. In addition to duties with the Comp Team, the Assistant Coach has the opportunity to pursue coaching masters skiers, operations, or outreach throughout the winter season in a supportive working environment.
Crested Butte is also home to a ski mountain known for its extreme terrain, some of the premier ski races in the country (the Alley Loop and Elk Mountain Grand Traverse) and some of the best backcountry skiing in the country in Colorado’s Elk Mountains.
Qualifications:
This is an ideal opportunity for a candidate looking to learn a lot about the profession of ski coaching while getting to experience all that Crested Butte has to offer. Candidates have the opportunity to pursue full-time seasonal employment with the Nordic Center.
This is also an ideal position for the remote worker looking for an opportunity to not just live in one of the West’s best ski towns, but be part of the community there too.
-
Preferred qualifications – high-level racing experience, at least one-year coaching experience.
-
Additional qualifications:
-
USSS membership in good-standing, or ability to obtain membership.
-
Understanding and adherence to SafeSport guidelines at all times.
-
Advanced knowledge of ski technique, with additional knowledge of technical aspects of training, waxing, and ski selection a plus.
