Hanneman Rides Confidence and Finishing Punch for U.S. Nationals Skate Sprint Title

On the second day of U.S. nationals in Houghton, Mich., Reese Hanneman topped defending champ Dakota Blackhorse-von Jess by 0.35 seconds in the freestyle sprint. After winning the qualifier, Hanneman continued his winning streak straight through to the final. Two Canadians reached the final, Julien Locke and Evan Palmer-Charrette, as did Fredrik Schwenke and Miles Havlick.

NMU's Fredrik Schwencke skied to victory in Friday's 20 k classic mass start, avoiding a crash in the final meters of the race which took out Colorado's Rune Malo Ødegård and New Mexico's Aku Nikander. In the women's 15 k New Mexico's Emilie Cedervaern double-poled past Utah's Veronika Mayerhofer to her first NCAA victory.

Freeman Strikes Late in Men’s 30 k Mass Start, Holds On for National Title

Kris Freeman knew he couldn't let the U.S. nationals 30 k classic mass start come down to a sprint. The seasoned veteran sat patiently throughout the three-lap race on Thursday, then attacked with 2 1/2 kilometers to go to take the title by 3.7 seconds over APU's Lex Treinen.

Heads turned and ears perked up alongside the course at U.S. Cross Country Championships on Sunday as Kyle Bratrud was rumored to be leading the men's 15 k freestyle individual start. In fact, the Northern Michigan senior led from start to finish, and ended up winning for his first top 20 at nationals.
