In the third stage of the Tour de Ski (TdS), there was no doubt who was in control after the qualifier. Sweden’s Stina Nilsson, who skied the fastest qualification time in 3:30.52, won the 1.4 k freestyle sprint in Val Müstair, Switzerland on Tuesday.
Nilsson made a clean sweep of her quarterfinal, semi-final, and the final on her way to the win. In a photo finish for second and third, the U.S. Ski Team’s (USST) Sophie Caldwell placed second (+2.27) while teammate Jessie Diggins placed third (+2.27).
Both Caldwell and Diggins advanced from the first semi-final, won by Nilsson. Caldwell placed second in the semi, Diggins third, as she advanced as a lucky loser.
Caldwell was the fourth fastest qualifier (+2.15). Diggins qualified in 15th (+6.73).
Diggins now leads the TdS by 1.1 seconds over Norway’s Ingvild Flugstad Østberg. Østberg placed fourth in Tuesday’s sprint.
Teammate Sadie Bjornsen qualified in sixth (+3.40), but ran out of real estate down the stretch in the second quarterfinal where she ended up third and did not advance. Bjornsen placed 13th overall.
For Canada, Dahria Beatty placed 39th and Emily Nishikawa 48th.

For the men, it was another opportunity for Norway’s Johannes Høsflot Klæbo to raise his arms and grandstand across the line in the men’s final. Klæbo won the final in 3:03.78 minutes with a 2.35-second margin over second place skier Federico Pellegrino from Italy. Sergey Ustiugov of Russia finished third on the day (+3.07).
Klæbo now leads the TdS overall by 12.0 seconds over second place Ustiugov. Alexander Bolshunov from Russia sits in third overall after finishing seventh in the Stage 3 sprint.
Simi Hamilton (USST) qualified in sixth (+4.30) and ended up 13th overall in the sprint. Teammate Kevin Bolger (USST) placed 34th, as he missed qualifying for the heats by less than one second. Ben Lustgarten (CGRP)placed 77th. Erik Bjornsen (USST) did not start today’s stage.
For Canada, Alex Harvey was 37th overall, Bob Thompson 62nd, and Lenny Valjas 72nd.
