Beckie Scott is one of 15 athletes nominated to the IOC Athletes' Commission. There are two positions on this commission coming available during the Olympic Winter Games in Turin, Italy. Beckie Scott is one of two cross-country skiers nominated to the Athletes' Commission and the only North American athlete.
The election for these positions will be held from February 8 to February 23, 2005 during the XX Olympic Winter Games in Turin, Italy. In order to be eligible for a position on the Athletes' Commission the candidate must have competed in the IX Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City or be expected to participate in the XX Olympic Winter Games in Turin, Italy. Furthermore, the National Olympic Committee (NOC) that nominates the athlete must also have an Athletes' Commission.
After the elections in Turin, the two selected athletes will become members of the IOC for the duration of their 8-year mandate with the Commission.
Created in 1981, the IOC Athletes’ Commission provides a link between Olympic athletes and the IOC. It also allows athletes to have their voices heard within the Olympic Movement. Since 2000, the Commission Chairman has been no other than Olympic champion and six-times world champion in the pole vault, Sergey Bubka, who is also an IOC Executive Board member.
