Anchorage Rollerski Grand Prix Finale

This past Sunday, 52 rollerski racers gathered at Kincaid Park in Anchorage, Alaska for the 5th and final race of the Anchorage Municipal Rollerski Grand Prix. Sunny skies were in order for the classical mass-start race.

APUNSC skier Bart Dengel edged out UAA skier Andy Liebner in a sprint for the finish in a five man pack. It was a photo finish with identical times of 29:33, but in the end Bart was just a few inches ahead in the finish lunge. James Southam (APUNSC) was third, Anders Haugen was fourth, and Jeff Ellis was fifth. The men’s course was approximately 10 km and was described by some as a 'double pole derby.'

On the women's side, APUNSC skier Cassie Rice broke away late in the race to win in 16:52 and outpace teammates Kikkan Randall and Laura Valaas. The majority of the 5 km race consisted of a breakaway pack of four skiers, until Rice turned on the burners for the victory.

Junior 2 men’s honors went to Alaska Winter Stars/South Anchorage High skier Sam Dougherty, while Mike Matteson (APUNSC) won the J1/OJ category.

Becca Rorabaugh (APUNSC) out-kicked Alaska Winter Stars/Service High standout Amy Glen (2nd) and Alaska Winter Stars/West High senior Rachelle Kanady (3rd) for the the junior women’s victory.

This 5 race Grand Prix summer series was sponsored by the Municipality of Anchorage, and was co-sponsored by the APUNSC and the Alaska Winter Stars ski programs.
