Rossignol recalls top-of-the-line Xium ski boots

FasterSkierJuly 15, 20092

Rossignol has recalled some Xium and X-11 ski boots sold from December 2007 to June 2009, due to a potentially hazardous defect.  The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, in cooperation with Rossignol, announced a voluntary recall of the boots.  The recall effects nearly 3,000 pairs of boots in the US and 1,000 in Canada.

According to CPSC and HC, the sole of the boot may separate from the upper, potentially causing a crash.  Not all Xium and X-11 boots sold during the above time period are subject to the recall.  There may be a 5 or 6 digit lot number stamped in the right boot under the removable insole (see photo below). If there is no lot number, or if the lot number is not on the following list, the boots are not being recalled.

The recall notice recommends that consumers stop using effected boots immediately and contact Rossignol to receive a free replacement or a refund.

A similar recall is underway in Europe, and Rossignol has moved their production operations to more modern facilities in order to eliminate the issues.

I think this recall needs to be expanded. I have two pairs of Xium Classic boots that have completely detached from their soles – but neither one has the lot number described above. One blew on a downhill while rollerskiing and I was luck not to lose any skin. The other blew 5k into a 20k race. Just after I caught the eventual winner. Lots of funny looks from other racers as I limped home. I’d like some compensation for the win in that race along with a refund on the boots ; ) I’ve switched back to Alpina since.

Likewise I’ve three pair of Rossi x-ium skate boots and the newest pair have soles that are separating from the upper. Boots have ‘made in Romania’ tag, but no serial # stamped on boot inside footbed can be found…….I’ve submitted a replacement request to Rossignol and am still hopeful they will stand behind their product. I love the fit of the Rossi boots, we ski the x-9 combi boot for classical and ski at least six pair of Rossi nordic skis.
