National Race Wrap-Up For Dec. 14 &15

East:
The eastern race season got underway this weekend with the Grafton
Eastern Cup. Saturday race was a sprint and two veterans, now coaches,
used their experience to take the wins. John Farra (Maine Winter Sports
Center) won the men's sprint, ahead of David Smutok and Ryan Foster of
Stratton. Coreen Woodbury (UNH coach) won the women's ahead of Morgan
Smith and Gretchen Czaja, a J1 from Vernon, VT.

On Sunday, junior Carina Hamel of Massachusetts beat out elite Masters
Natalie Cartwright and Dorcas Wonsavage in the 10K freestyle. In the men's
10K free, Eli Enman of Sleepy Hollow Nordic won, followed by Matt Schadow
(UNH) and Andy Newell (Stratton – US Development Team)

Midwest:
In Ironwood, MI the ABR Season Opener weekend of races saw some elite
competitors taking the wins. These races were count towards the National
Ranking List (NRL), so it was a good chance for most skiers to try to
score good points against the top skiers in the region.

Northern Michigan University's Chris Cook won both Saturday's classic
race and Sunday's freestyle. He won the classic ahead of teammate Hjali
Westle, followed by Matt Weier in third. In Sunday's skate race, Weier
finished second, with Adam Swank in third overall.

On the women's side, Lindsey Weier, junior skier and 2002 Olympian, won
the women's 5K classic ahead of Rachel Daw and Hilary Patzer. In the Sunday
freestyle race, Aubrey Smith edged out Weier, while Patzer took third
again.

Season Opener

Rockies:
On the Olympic courses at Soldier Hollow, former Olympian John Aalberg
edged out Factory Team skier Scott Loomis by half a second for the win
in the 10K classic race on Saturday. Ryan Quinn of the University of Utah
was third.
On the women's side, Kelly Milligan took the win ahead of Laurie Humbert.
