In an effort to reduce the work load for the FasterSkier.com staff, we are just going to go ahead and give you the results for every classic race this season right here: Freemans go 1-2, Wagner dominates women’s race. There you go, no need to wait for the races.
When it comes to classic races in the 2002-2003 season, the top of the results sheet hasn’t been changing much. And the favorites came through again on Saturday in Rumford, Maine as US Nationals got underway with the distance classic races. Overnight 6-10 inches of new snow fell on the course, but the crew at Black Mountain did an excellent job of managing the ongoing snowstorm to provide good track conditions.

In the men’s 30K classic race, Kris Freeman continued to show that he is the skier to beat, and no one seems to be able to catch him. He won a second 30K classic National Championship to go with the title he won at Soldier Hollow in 2000. He was followed, almost two minutes back, by his brother Justin. The surprise of the day in the men’s race was Lars Flora who took third. Lars was a 2002 Olympian, but he is primarily known as a skater and excels at sprinting. He was the 2002 National Sprint Champion. This bodes well for Flora for the rest of the week.

Andrew Johnson was fourth, Patrick Weaver fifth. The University of Alaska Anchorage was strong, with both Zack Violett and Tobias Schwoerer in the top ten (8th and 9th). Also in the top ten were Chris Cook, Carl Swenson, and Chad Giese.

In the women’s 15K classic race, Wagner won by a minute and 10 seconds over Erinn Whitmer from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She was followed by two more college skiers: Martina Stursova and [no first name given] Strandberg of the University of New Mexico. Erin Quinn-Hurst continued her stellar improvement this season by placing fifth overall, just ahead of 2002 Olympian Lindsey Weier. Two skiers known for their skating prowess, Aelin Peterson and Katja Ivanova finished 7th and 8th respectively. Rounding out the top ten were Alison Crocker of Dartmouth College and Melissa Oram from the US Development program.

Among the notables who did not race were 2002 Olympians Justin Wadsworth and Kikkan Randall.
