to the final period of the World Cup.</P><br />
<P><B>So we’ll be seeing you on the World Cup in 2003/2004? </B></P><br />
<P>Yes, I hope so. Towards the end of the season I see myself racing the big races<br />
in Europe I see the winter as parts to my season. There’s the early part<br />
with some good races we’re getting into now. In the midseason I’ll<br />
go back to training without racing. Then its time to rev it up again for the<br />
end-of-season races.</P><br />
<P><B>Dave when did you first begin training systematically for skiing?</B></P><br />
<P>I’d have to say probably as a senior in high school. I worked really hard<br />
at a paper mill in high school and in the summer when in college. So this made<br />
it really hard to train as well as I’d like because of the long hours,<br />
working nights. I didn’t really get quality training in until after college.<br />

<P><B>You’re a graduate from Bates. There’s been a handful of top American<br />
skiers have come out of there in recent years -Justin Freeman, Justin Easter<br />
also come to mind. What was it about the Eastern collegiate ski scene that worked<br />
for you?</B></P><br />
<P>I don’t know. It probably wasn’t the ideal, with the western schools<br />
being more competitive with the foreign imports. But you can be good anywhere<br />
if you want to and there were some good guys skiing in the east. I’d hop<br />
into a many Nor-Ams back then as possible. U.S. Nationals and NCAA Championships<br />
were always tough. I must say though its really nice to have a degree. I’m<br />
very satisfied I decided to stick it out.</P><br />
<P> </P><br />
<P><B>Coming out of college you really seemed to step your skiing to another level.<br />
What are some of the differences in being a successful college skier to being<br />
a U.S. team member of the 2001 and 2003 Worlds teams?</B></P><br />
<P> </P><br />
<P>Training. No doubt about it. Having the time and really putting in quality<br />
training hours. Good, hard training, there’s no secret there. My motivation<br />
rose once I was done with college life.</P><br />
<P><B>Do you feel stiffed by not being named to the U.S. Team following several<br />
years of consistently good results?</B></P><br />
<P> </P><br />
<P>No. It’s frustrating that the U.S.S.A. doesn’t have the money for<br />
a more complete team but you can’t think about those things. I am doing<br />
just fine. As far as this teams is concerned Trond (Nystad) and Pete (Vordenberg)<br />
have made me feel a part of the team, even though I’m not. Also, not being<br />
named to the team is a huge motivating factor. It’s most important that<br />
I believe in myself. </P><br />
<P>You hinted that you work closely with both Trond and Pete. Who do you go to<br />
for all your training or technique consultation?</P><br />
<P>For sure, I work with Trond and Pete. I also work closely with Dick Taylor.<br />
He’s from my home town. Eli Brown is a close friend and innovator who I<br />
can bounce ideas off. It’s a collective effort.</P><br />
<P><B>With the ski season getting underway in early November and not finishing<br />
until the Spring Series in April, you spend some time on the road. What’s<br />
a must have for all the traveling?</B></P><br />
<P>Books.</P><br />
<P><B>Read anything good lately?</B></P><br />
<P>I just finished <U>The Book of Tea </U>on Japanese tea ceremonies. I like poetry.<br />
I’ve been reading that lately. Especially Robert Frost. Reading’s<br />
my number one pastime on the road.</P><br />
<P> </P><br />
<P><B>Finally, will we see you in Torino 2006? </B></P><br />
<P> </P><br />
<P>Absolutely.</P><br />
