Position Title: Nordic Program Director
Reports To: Executive Director
Job Objective:
The AVSC Nordic program is a crucial element of the Club’s competitive mix. It provides an important link with the rich Nordic tradition in the Roaring Fork Valley and helps distinguish AVSC as a leading choice for training in all mountain-based winter disciplines. The Nordic program has established a tradition of athletic and academic excellence. Skiers from AVSC have been among the country’s best and are routinely well represented on the honor roll at Aspen High School. Thanks to the vision of many Nordic supporters, the program has easy access to a superb training track adjacent to the Friedl Pfeifer Clubhouse. AVSC’s Nordic program can be a model for other programs throughout the country.
The Nordic Program Director coordinates all aspects the competitive Nordic program: training philosophy and its implementation, representation with RMD and USSA, hiring of coaches, access to training venues, coordination of events hosted, risk management, parent involvement and budget to ensure the ongoing health of the Nordic program, an emphasis of AVSC core values and the realization of the full potential of Nordic athletes. The Nordic Program Director must exhibit superior leadership, organizational, supervisory, communication, and coaching skills.
Scope:
The Nordic Program Director works under the general supervision of the executive director, and has frequent interaction with the AVSC Board Program Committee, officials from USSA and RMD, officials from Aspen and down-valley schools, as well as athletes, staff, parents, volunteers and supporters. The Nordic Program Director is also Head Coach and oversees the athletic and character development of approximately 40 athletes participating at a variety of levels within competitive Nordic skiing. Responsibilities include oversight of a budget of $80,000.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Vision and Direction
• Guided by AVSC’s mission and core values, determine what it means for the Nordic program to be the best it can be and establish the goals necessary to achieve this
• Clarify and document goals for each existing Nordic programs
• Establish goals and implement a plan for year-round program offerings
• Establish long-term goals for participation in all program offerings
• Work with executive director and a volunteer committee to assess the feasibility of a Nordic jumping program
Risk Management
• Work with Nordic coaches to ensure appropriate training progressions for all athletes
• Annually review and summarize program’s safety statistics
• Document training of all Nordic coaches
Fiscal Responsibility
• Work with the Executive Director to establish the annual Nordic Program budget
• Work with the Executive Director to establish program pricing
• Coordinate the various Nordic fundraising events — typically three per year
• Track monthly financial results against budget
• Implement changes as needed to achieve financial goals
Program Support/Supervision
• Serve as head coach for the Nordic program
• Ensure that AVSC athletes are represented at the highest levels of competition
• Hire and manage coaching staff to ensure individual needs of each participant are met
• Oversee scheduling and coordination of all Nordic events hosted by AVSC
• Coordinate performance appraisals of all Nordic staff
• Work with AVSC personnel to develop all pertinent information for Club-wide program guide
• Oversee scheduling of coaches, registration and travel/transportation of athletes for all events
• Coordinate end-of-season evaluation of programs
• Coordinate preparation and delivery of all parent/participant information including overall program and individual goals
• Work with the Executive Director to determine annual scholarship awards
• Act as media spokesperson for the program
• Ensure weekly program results and special achievements are received by Marketing & Development Manager for timely submission to local media
Collaboration with Other AVSC Programs
• Work with directors of other competitive programs to ensure all have access to the Club’s resources: radios, cameras, timing equipment, vans, etc.
• Work with Base Camp Director to ensure recruitment and enrollment of Base Camp “graduatesâ€
Partnerships
• Work with Aspen High School and down-valley schools to ensure athletes’ academic needs are met
• Ensure AVSC has a strong voice in RMD and USSA
• Tap the resources of RMD and USSA to ensure AVSC benefits from best practices for the development of athletes and staff
Other
• Assist Executive Director with Club-wide fundraising
• Assist with and participate in Club-wide functions
• Plan and implement efforts to ensure strong enrollment in competitive Nordic programs
• Special projects as assigned
