Italian Giorgio Di Centa and Frode Estil of Norway were in a photo finish for 2nd place, with Di Centa eventually being determined the silver medal winner and Estil the bronze.
A surprising performance came from Slovakian Martin Bajcicak, who stayed strong and consistent throughout both the classic and skate phases of the race and finised 4th only 1.3 seconds behind Vittoz. Anders Soedergren of Sweden ended up 5th, 2.1 seconds back, after dropping from third towards the very end of the race.
The top skier for the host nation (Germany) was Jens Filbrich in 14th, 1 minute 8 seconds out of first. Tobias Angerer was the only other German to finish in the top 20, while heavy-hitters Rene Sommerfeldt and Axel Teichmann struggled in 28th and 30th.
