The University of Maine at Presque Isle announces a 3-year fixed-length Cross-Country Ski Lecturer/Coaching position beginning September 1, 2005, which may be renewed depending on the success of the program. The successful candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree. A Master’s Degree must be completed for a continuing contract after three years and the candidate should be able to demonstrate successful ski coaching experience. The position will consist of one-half coaching and one-half teaching within the university’s ski coaching concentration. The classes will include, but not be limited to, beginning, intermediate, and advanced ski coaching techniques, program design and evaluation and supervision of practica and fieldwork experiences. Teaching as a collateral assignment is possible. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for recruiting athletes and developing and maintaining a working relationship with the university, surrounding communities and the Main Winter Sports Center.
The Maine Winter Sports Center is a non-profit organization that seeks to reestablish skiing as the dominant winter lifestyle in Maine by investing in the rural communities where skiing remains viable. MWSC has built or acquired four facilities in Aroostook County: the 10th Mountain Center in Fort Kent, the Nordic Heritage Center and Quoggy Jo Community Alpine Area in Presque Isle, and the Big Rock Alpine Skyway in Mars Hill. These ski areas support programs for local children and adults, as well as a MWSC competitive team. The facilities also host world-class competitions that bring in superior athletes from across the country and around the world.
