Hundreds of skiers of all abilities watched as today's SuperTour freestyle sprints were contested in West Yellowstone, MT.
Wendy Wagner Leads her Semifinal
As it turned out, Wagner dominated the entire day, cruising in with arms waving, a comfortable 2.5 seconds ahead of Laura Valaas (Whitman College) in the A Final. Valaas completely dusted last year's overall SuperTour winner Karin Camenisch by 6.1 seconds, while Dartmouth's Alison Crocker took fourth. NMU skier Lindsay Williams, who won the classic sprint at Nationals last season, came in first in the B Final for fifth place, ahead of FSx team member Kate Whitcomb of the Maine Winter Sports Center.
In the men's A Final, it came down to Rossignol skier Eli Enman from Vermont, Leif Zimmerman of the Bridger Ski Foundation in Bozeman, and the two U.S. Ski Team funded sprinters–Torin Koos and Andrew Newell. Koos took the lead for the first half of the race, followed closely by Newell.
The four stayed close together throughout the race, but coming up the last long straightaway Zimmerman accelerated quickly and got a very small lead on Koos. The two battled hard down the finishing stretch and despite Koos' big lunge across the line, Zimmerman was able to take the win by .4 seconds.
Men's A Final finish. Koos and Zimmerman Battle In Front, Newell In Third, Enman Stays Close In Fourth
