Italy is the Worlds leading long-distance nation. The top four sports in the men’s division and the top three spots in the overall women’s division in the FIS Marathon cup were captured by Italian marathon skiers.

There were eight races in the 2005/2006 FIS Marathon Cup. Anders Aukland of Norway won the final race, the Norwegian Birkie ahead of the Vasaloppet winner, Daniel Tynell and Estonian Raul Olle.

But none of these skiers had anything to do with the overall long-distance cup victory. That was totally dominated by Italy.

Marco Cattaneo was 12th in the Norwegian Birkie and with that ended the season as the long-distance king! Cattaneo won two competitions: Jizerska Padesatka and the American Birkie. He was also second in the Engadin Ski Marathon and captured points in all eight races in the long-distance cup.
Second place overall winner, Pierluigi Costantin also captured points in all eight races. His best was third in the Transjurasienne and the American Birkie.
Overall third place winner, Roberto de Zolt won Transjuarasienne and was second in the American Birkie. Fourth overall Tullio Grandelius won La Sgambeda.

The women’s Cup was also dominated by Italians:

Christina Paluselli won ahead of Anna Santer and Lara Peyrot. Paluselli won LaSgameda and Jizerska Padesatka and was second in Konig Ludwig Lauf. She was also third in the American Birkie, Engadin and the Norwegian Birkie and won the Swedish Vasaloppet (not a part of the Marathon Cup). Santer won the Transjurasienne and the American Birkie. Peyrot had three second places.
