Junior Nationals got off to an exciting start in Houghton, Michigan on Monday with the classic sprint races.
New England and Pacific Northwest skiers each earned two victories for thier regions in the pursuit of the Alaska Cup, given to the top overall region at Junior Nationals. New England skier Jennie Bender won the J1 girls and Morgan Smyth won the OJ girls. For PNSA, Dakota Blackhorse von Jess won the OJ boys and Casey Kutz won the J2 girls. Alaskan Eric Packer won the J2 boys, and Far West's Matt Gelso won the J1 boys.
Alaska Cup points were not available on Monday evening.
The Junior Nationals continue on Wednesday with the classic distance races. If any parents or coaches in Houghton have pictures they would like to send us, we would be happy to post some of them.
