There are no more races left that suits Norwegian Havard Skorstad. He is now retiring from elite level racing, but isn’t quite able to quit working out.

Havard Skorstad retired from racing at the end of the season. The first week of May is still not over and Havard had just got home from a rollerski workout when Langrenn.com called him to chat.

Haven’t you retired?

– Yes

But rollerskiing in May?

– Yes, this was my third rollerski workout.

Retired elite skiers are not rollerskiing in early May

– I’m job hunting and can train a little until I start working.

This was however the first time as an adult that he didn’t go skiing in the Norwegian mountains at Easter. Instead he traveled to warmer climate at the coast of Spain. He brought a roadbike as a backup in case it would turn out to be boring.

– We didn’t go to the beach once, biked the whole time.

The 33-year old Skorstad is among those who have done ski racing to satisfy his need for physical activity. That’s also why he says that he has no need for changing his lifestyle even when he is claiming that he is retiring.

We are bolding “claiming†for the simple reason that we probably will see with a bib on again.

– Pal Gunnar Mikkelsplass believes that I will be able to race at about the same level for one more season even if I drop my hours to 30 per month.

Havard was a member of the longdistance team the last two seasons. He was on the regular national team before that. The big changes the last 10-12 years have made it hard for him to find races that suit him. The problem is speed.

– I’m not good in sprint, mass-start or finish sprint.

That makes it hard.

– Individual start classic 30-kilometer is my best event.

The problem is however that this event hardly exists anymore.

– I have expired, says Skorstad, whom has a 2nd and 3rd place from the Norwegian championship. He has also two times been top ten in World Cup races and has one victory in the Tartu skimarathon.
