The Alaska Nanooks were declared victors Sunday in the Alaska Nordic Cup. But they didn’t win the way they would have liked.

With temperatures stuck around 10 below Sunday morning at Birch Hill Recreation Area, race officials unanimously decided to cancel relay races scheduled between the Nanooks and the University of Alaska Anchorage. That meant the Nanooks’ 22-20 advantage from Saturday’s freestyle races held up to give Fairbanks its first win in the three-year competition between Alaska’s two cross country ski teams.
